Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang, Brose and hub motors, explained
Every e-bike runs a motor from one of a handful of major manufacturers — and which brand it is shapes how the bike rides, what maintenance costs, and where you can get it serviced. Here's how the main systems compare, side by side.
"Which motor brand is this, and is it any good?" is one of the questions we hear most often — understandably, since the motor is the single most expensive and most defining part of an e-bike. There's no one "best" brand, though: Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang and Brose all build perfectly good mid-drive motors, each with its own trade-offs in weight, noise, torque and dealer support.
Around 80% of the bikes that come through our workshop have a Bosch mid-drive motor — no surprise, since it's been the most widely used system in the Netherlands for years. If you're new to the Dutch market coming from the UK, US or elsewhere, that Bosch dominance is worth knowing: it's quite different from what you may be used to abroad, where Shimano, Bafang or Yamaha might be far more common. We also regularly see Shimano STEPS, and on our newer ADO bikes a Bafang mid-drive or a brushless hub motor with Ananda electronics. Older Sparta, Batavus and Gazelle city bikes typically carry a hub motor.

Before you even start comparing brands, the type of motor matters just as much for how the bike actually rides.
Mounted at the bottom bracket, between the pedals. Low centre of gravity, and a natural riding feel because the motor amplifies your own pedalling force directly. Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang, Brose and Panasonic all make mid-drive motors almost exclusively. This is the standard setup on most modern e-bikes.
most commonBuilt into the rear wheel hub. Usually cheaper, and often less "natural" in feel, since the assistance isn't linked to your pedalling force but to a simpler sensor. Common on Sparta/Batavus ION models and Bafang hub motors on budget bikes.
Built into the front wheel hub — historically the first generation of e-bikes (older Gazelle models used this). Less common on new bikes today, though you'll still find it on some folding bikes and entry-level models.
Brands like VanMoof and Cowboy build their own hub motor and electronics as a closed, proprietary system that isn't sold as separate parts — different rules apply for repairs there. This is a common trap for newcomers to the Dutch market, where direct-to-consumer brands like these are popular.
Torque (Nm) is a rough measure of how much "push" the motor gives, most noticeable when pulling away or climbing. More torque isn't automatically better — it needs to match how you actually ride.

Torque figures are indicative, based on manufacturer specifications, and can vary by exact model year and version — if in doubt, check the type plate on the motor itself.
On paper, motors look fairly similar — in practice they differ in how quiet they are and how easy they are to service.
Brose has a reputation for being relatively quiet thanks to a belt drive inside the motor itself. Bosch and Shimano, which use gear-driven transmissions, are generally audible but not intrusive. Hub motors tend to be the quietest at low speed.
For every brand, the motor, display and battery form one linked system that can only be fully read out with that brand's own dealer diagnostic software. We're an official Bosch dealer and have that software in-house for Bosch systems.
A mid-drive motor from an established brand will usually run for several thousand kilometres, often 10+ years, under normal use. Wear tends to show up in the battery first — see our page on e-bike range and batteries — rather than in the motor itself.
You can't simply swap a Bosch motor for a Shimano one — the frame mounts, connectors, display and battery are all matched to one specific brand's system. A motor replacement always stays within the same brand and generation.
The motor brand is fixed at the point the bike was built — here's what to look out for.
The motor housing (usually at the bottom, near the bottom bracket) carries a sticker or engraving with the brand and type number. If you're not sure, the frame number plus a photo of the motor is normally enough for us to identify the system.
Bosch has two generations that are not cross-compatible: the older "Classic" system and the newer Smart System (with Kiox 300/500 displays and app pairing). Worth checking before assuming a part fits.
VanMoof, Cowboy and a few other direct-to-consumer brands run fully proprietary, closed electronics — parts aren't available through the usual bike-shop supply channels.

Proprietary system (motor and display sold as one unit), typically built on a TranzX base.
Mid-drive motor — a motor mounted at the bottom bracket, between the pedals.
Hub motor — a motor built into the front or rear wheel hub.
Torque (Nm) — the "push" the motor delivers; higher torque feels stronger, especially pulling away and climbing.
Torque sensor — measures how hard you're pedalling, for proportional assistance.
Cadence sensor — measures your pedalling speed (revolutions per minute).
PAS sensor — a simpler sensor that only registers "pedalling / not pedalling", commonly used with hub motors.
Dealer software — brand-specific diagnostic tool used to read out and update the motor, battery and display.
Smart System — Bosch's newer generation of electronics with app pairing, not compatible with Classic-generation parts.
Wattage (W) — the motor's nominal/continuous power output; EU law caps this at 250W continuous for a standard e-bike (with assistance up to 25 km/h).
OEM motor — a motor bought in by a bike brand from another manufacturer (e.g. Giant's SyncDrive, built on a Yamaha base) and sometimes run with the bike brand's own software.
Error code — a number or letter code on the display that points to a specific fault.
Nm (newton-metre) — the unit torque is measured in.

We're an official Bosch dealer with the manufacturer's own dealer software. We can read out motor, battery and display in full, and warranty claims are handled directly through us.
For Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang, Brose and Panasonic systems we handle mechanical maintenance and general diagnostics. For software updates or warranty claims on those systems, we refer you to a brand-specific dealer.

Which motor brand is the best?
There's no single "best" brand — Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang and Brose all make reliable mid-drive motors. The real differences are in ride feel, noise, and how easy it is to get parts and service locally. Bosch has the widest dealer network in the Netherlands.
Can I have a different brand's motor fitted to my bike?
No. The motor, display, battery and frame are all designed as one matched system. A motor replacement always stays within the same brand and the same generation of that brand's system.
What does torque (Nm) actually mean?
Torque is the "push" the motor delivers. Higher torque feels stronger when pulling away or climbing, but it says nothing about top speed — assistance is legally capped at 25 km/h across the EU.
Why do so many of eBikeXL's bikes have a Bosch motor?
Bosch has been the most widely used system among major bike brands in the Netherlands for years, and we're an official dealer for it ourselves — which is why roughly 80% of our bikes run a Bosch motor.
Is a hub motor worse than a mid-drive motor?
Not necessarily worse, just different: the ride feel is less "natural" because the assistance isn't directly linked to your pedalling force. Hub motors are often cheaper and mechanically simpler, though.
Can I check which motor brand is on my bike myself?
Usually, yes — the brand and type number are on a sticker or engraving on the motor housing near the bottom bracket. If you're not sure, send us a photo along with the frame number and we'll identify it.
How long does an e-bike motor last?
Under normal use and maintenance, mid-drive motors from established brands typically last for years — the battery is usually due for replacement well before the motor itself wears out.
