Squeaking brakes on your e-bike?
Here are the 25 causes.

Even with good brakes and brand-new pads, an e-bike brake can squeal, screech or rub. In almost every case it's harmless — sometimes it's worth a closer look. Here's exactly what's going on, sorted by brake type.

"My brakes are squeaking" is by far the most common question we hear in the first few weeks after someone buys a bike from us. It's an understandable worry — a screeching brake sounds broken. But squeaking is almost never a defect. A brake makes noise through vibration, and vibration has dozens of possible causes that have nothing to do with the quality of the brake or the pads.

An e-bike is also heavier and faster than the classic Dutch city bike ("omafiets") you'll see everywhere here. The brakes have to convert more energy into heat with every stop, so e-bike brakes squeak more readily than you might expect from an ordinary bicycle. That's physics, not a fault.

Below are all the causes, grouped by brake type, each tagged: harmless worth a look action needed.

Why do disc brakes squeak?

Most e-bikes on Dutch roads run hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano, Magura or Tektro. These are the causes we see most often.

New pads haven't bedded in yet

New pads and a new rotor need to "bed in" together first. That takes roughly 20 to 50 firm brake applications. Until then, the brake squeaks and bites less powerfully. This also applies to a bike we deliver ready to ride with fresh pads.

Moisture: rain, dew or a recent wash

A wet rotor squeaks for the first few brake applications until the water is gone. In the Dutch climate, you'll hear this almost every morning after a bike has stood outside overnight.

Cold weather

Cold pads are harder and squeak more. After a few brake applications the brake warms up and goes quiet — common on frosty Dutch winter mornings.

Contamination: chain spray, oil or silicone on the rotor

The number one cause of persistent squeaking. One over-enthusiastic burst of chain spray and there's a fine mist on the brake rotor. The sound is sharp and braking power drops. Contaminated pads can't be cleaned properly — they need replacing. The rotor itself can be cleaned with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.

Glazed pads

Overheating — or, just as often, consistently very light braking — leaves the pad surface smooth and hard. Glazed pads squeak and brake less effectively. Sometimes sanding the surface saves them; more often they need replacing.

Warped rotor

A rotor that isn't perfectly true (from a fall, a kerb, or transport) ticks or rubs against the pads once per wheel rotation. Usually straightened in a few minutes.

Caliper not aligned straight over the rotor

If the caliper sits even slightly off-centre, one pad keeps touching the rotor continuously. You'll hear a rubbing sound while riding, even without braking. Re-aligning it is a two-minute job.

Wheel or thru-axle not properly secured

After a puncture repair or transporting the bike, the wheel sometimes doesn't sit perfectly in the dropouts. The rotor is then slightly off-centre and rubs. Loosening and re-tightening usually fixes it.

Loose bolts on the caliper, adapter or rotor

A caliper-adapter bolt or centre-lock ring that's vibrated slightly loose creates a resonance that sounds like a squeak or rattle. Simply checking and re-tightening the bolts solves it.

Brake pads are (nearly) worn out

Below roughly 1 mm of pad material the brake starts to squeal; at metal-on-metal you'll hear a harsh, grinding sound and see scoring on the rotor. Replace immediately — otherwise the rotor is next. Read more about why pads sometimes wear faster than you'd expect on our page about worn brake pads.

Sintered (metallic) brake pads

Metallic pads last longer and brake better in the rain, but they squeak more by nature than organic (resin) pads — especially when cold. Nothing is wrong; if you want a quieter ride, ask for organic pads instead.

New pads on an old rotor (or vice versa)

A bedded-in rotor carries a wear pattern from its old pads. New pads don't match that pattern perfectly and squeak until they've bedded in themselves. On a seriously worn rotor (under 1.5 mm) the squeak may not go away at all.

Overheating: heavy loads or a long descent

A cargo bike carrying two children, a fully loaded pannier, or a long descent from a Dutch dyke road: the brake heats up, the material temporarily glazes (brake fade) and the brake squeals. Let it cool and use short, firm applications instead of dragging the brake continuously.

Sand, grit or dirt between pad and rotor

A small stone or grain of sand can cause a sharp squeal for several minutes and score a groove into the rotor. It usually works itself free; if not, take the wheel out and blow it clean.

Pistons not retracting evenly

Dirty or dry pistons inside the caliper stay slightly extended, so one pad keeps dragging. Cleaning and freeing up the pistons solves it — it's part of a standard brake service.

Resonance from the frame, fork or adapter

The brake "sings" because the frame, fork or caliper adapter vibrates at a particular frequency. This is the classic brake squeal: a brake that's technically fine but still produces a tone. Anti-squeal paste or different pads often help.

Brake hose or cable rattling against the frame

Not brake noise at all, though it sounds like it. A brake hose knocking against the fork or frame is easily secured with a small cable tie.

Bike stood still for a while (light rust film on the rotor)

After a few weeks standing in a damp shed — very common in the Netherlands — a thin oxide film forms on the rotor. The first few rides squeak and rub; after that it's gone.

Rim brakes (V-brake & hydraulic rim brake)
Squeaking rim brakes

Many classic Dutch e-bikes — Gazelle, Sparta, Batavus, Koga — use Magura HS11 or HS22 hydraulic rim brakes, or V-brakes. These squeak for different reasons than disc brakes.

No toe-in

Rim brake pads should touch the rim a fraction earlier at the front edge than at the back. If they sit perfectly parallel to the rim, they vibrate and squeal. Adjusting this properly takes about fifteen minutes.

Contaminated or oxidised rim

Aluminium rims build up a black film of brake dust and oxide over time. Clean with degreaser and a light abrasive pad, and lightly sand the pads too.

Hardened (old) rubber

Brake rubber ages even if you barely ride. Old pads go hard and shiny, squeak, and brake poorly. Cheap and easy to replace.

Rim not true, or worn braking surface

A wheel that's slightly out of true, or a braking surface worn into a hollow groove, produces a rhythmic sound. A rim with a deep braking groove needs replacing — that's a safety issue, not just a noise issue.

Roller brake, drum brake & coaster brake
Screeching hub brakes

Shimano roller brakes (Nexus) and drum brakes are common on Dutch city e-bikes. Their noise is a different story altogether.

Roller brake grease has run out or aged

A roller brake relies on a special grease inside the hub. Once it's dried out, the brake screeches loudly, brakes jerkily, or grabs far too aggressively. Never lubricate it with regular grease or oil — only genuine Shimano roller-brake grease. This is a standard maintenance job.

Overheated roller brake

Dragging the brake for a long time — for example with heavy cargo on the back — makes the hub glowing hot; the grease thins and the brake starts to squeal. Let it cool and apply the brake in short bursts next time instead.

Cable or lever squeaking, not the brake itself

A dry brake cable, a dry lever pivot, or a dry hinge point can squeak when you pull the lever. A drop of oil on the cable and pivot fixes it — not on the brake itself.

Brake type by brand — what's normal to expect

Not every Dutch e-bike brakes the same way, and the squeak that's "normal" depends on which system you've got. Here's a rough guide by brand and bike type — check your own manual or ask us if you're not sure which system you have.

Hydraulic disc brakes

Shimano, Magura or Tektro. Fitted to most Bosch mid-motor e-bikes and sportier or trekking models — Riese & Müller, Cube, Trek, Kalkhoff, Stella, Qwic, HNF. Covered by causes 01–18 above.

Classic NL
Hydraulic rim brakes

Magura HS11 or HS22. A very Dutch setup on classic step-through models from Gazelle, Sparta, Batavus, Koga and Cortina. Squeaking here is about rim condition and pad toe-in, not the rotor causes above.

Roller, drum & coaster brakes

Shimano Nexus roller brakes and drum brakes are common on budget and city-focused models, often paired with a front disc brake. Cargo bikes such as Urban Arrow, Lovens and Babboe frequently combine a front disc with a rear roller or drum brake.

Brake brands, part names & the Dutch terms you'll hear

Useful if you're calling a Dutch bike shop, reading a Dutch manual, or searching a Dutch parts website. These are the brands and terms you'll come across.

English term Dutch term Notes
Brake pads remblokjes Wear part. Disc-brake pads and rim-brake pads (blokjes) are different shapes — not interchangeable.
Rotor / disc remschijf The metal disc a disc brake clamps onto. Comes in several diameters (commonly 160/180/203 mm).
Caliper remklauw Houses the pistons that squeeze the pads onto the rotor.
Brake lever remhendel The handlebar-mounted lever you pull.
Bleeding ontluchten Removing air from a hydraulic brake line — workshop work.
Common brake brands Shimano (MT200 / BR-MT420 / Deore, most common on Bosch e-bikes), Magura (MT-series disc, HS11/HS22 rim), Tektro, Hope, TRP.
Roller brake rollerrem Shimano's sealed rear hub brake, badged "Nexus" on many Dutch city bikes.

Glossary
Brake terms explained

Bedding-in — new pads and a new rotor wearing into each other over 20–50 firm brake applications.

Brake fade — temporary loss of power from overheating, e.g. on a long descent or with a heavy load.

Caliper — the housing that holds the pistons and pads and clamps them onto the rotor.

Glazing — pad material gone hard and smooth from overheating or very light braking; squeaks and grips poorly.

Hydraulic brake line / hose — the fluid-filled hose that transmits lever pressure to the caliper.

Organic (resin) pads — quieter, softer pads that wear faster than metallic pads and lose power sooner in the wet.

Piston — the plunger inside a caliper that pushes the pad against the rotor.

Resonance / brake squeal — vibration that builds up in the frame, fork or caliper and produces a tone even when the brake works correctly.

Rotor / disc — the metal disc mounted to the wheel hub that a disc brake clamps onto.

Sintered (metallic) pads — long-lasting, better in the wet, but noisier and slower to warm up.

Thru-axle — secures a wheel through the dropouts; if not fully tightened, the rotor can sit off-centre.

Toe-in — a slight forward angle on rim brake pads so the front edge touches first, preventing vibration.

Bleeding — removing air bubbles from a hydraulic system to restore a firm lever feel.

Roller brake — Shimano's sealed, grease-lubricated rear hub brake, often badged Nexus.

Drum brake — an enclosed hub brake using internal shoes, similar in behaviour to a roller brake.

Rim brake — clamps directly onto the wheel rim, mechanically (V-brake) or hydraulically (Magura HS11/HS22).

What you can expect from us

Every bike we deliver has been checked by our mechanics for braking force, pad thickness, caliper alignment and rotor thickness. Even so, a brake can squeak in the first few weeks — for exactly the reasons above. That's not a sign of a poorly maintained brake.

Taking it to a different workshop? Ask about pad thickness

"The pads are worn" is the fastest extra job a workshop can add to an invoice. Ask to see the old pads or have the thickness measured — replacement is genuinely needed below roughly 1 mm of material. Squeaking brakes — FAQ
My new e-bike squeaks when I brake. Is that normal?

Yes, usually. New or recently replaced brake pads need 20 to 50 firm brake applications to bed in properly. Disc brakes also squeak in damp or cold conditions, which is common riding a bike in the Netherlands.

Can I fix squeaking brakes myself?

Often, yes: cleaning the rotor with isopropyl alcohol, re-aligning the caliper, or re-securing the wheel are all things you can do yourself. Never use oil, WD-40 or silicone spray anywhere near the brakes. If in doubt, especially with hydraulic lines, don't take it apart yourself.

Why do e-bike brakes squeak more than a regular bicycle's?

An e-bike weighs roughly 10 to 15 kg more than a standard bike and rides consistently faster. The brakes have to dissipate more energy, run hotter, and wear faster as a result.

Is squeaking dangerous?

Squeaking on its own isn't. What's dangerous is a brake that's braking less effectively: a lever that pulls all the way to the handlebar, a harsh grinding metal sound, or a noticeably longer stopping distance.

Are squeaking brakes covered under warranty?

Squeaking is not a defect, so it isn't covered under warranty. Brake pads are a wear item, just like tyres and a chain.

My e-bike has a roller brake or drum brake. Is squeaking still normal?

Less so than with a disc brake. A roller brake that screeches usually means the internal grease has run out, which is a straightforward maintenance job using the correct roller-brake grease.
